Heritage Vancouver is hosting a forum on "the Future of Heritage Schools in the Seismic Environment." The Ministry of Education’s funding formula for the seismic upgrading of public schools has caused the Vancouver School Board to conclude that their only option is to demolish many heritage Schools and replace them with new buildings. School Renewal groups have formed in several communities to look for different solutions to seismically upgrade while still preserving important community landmarks. The panel discussion will focus on the importance of these schools in our communities and creative solutions for ensuring that our heritage schools are safe.
The panel will consist of the following participants:
Z Smith is a Vancouver architect who serves as chair of the General Gordon Elementary School Parents Advisory Council's Building Renewal Committee. His focus will be on a pilot program exploring an alternate framework for school renewal that is now under development with General Gordon Elementary as one of the pilot schools.
Annabel Vaughan is an intern architect and a Sessional Professor in the School of Architecture + Landscape Architecture at the University of British Columbia. She has been involved in the community effort to retain the 1913 wing of Charles Dickens Elementary for the past 4 years. Her focus will be on the Dickens experience and a Toronto model for land and building stewardship.
Meg Stanley, MA, Historian, Commonwealth Historic Resource Management Limited prepared the contextual history that formed part of the VSB/City report on the heritage value of the city’s schools. She is most interested in the dialogue between architecture, pedagogy, curriculum, and civic history as reflected in Vancouver’s history of school building.
